TIDY TOWNS COMPETITION: The Tidy Towns Group has decided not to enter the national competition this year. In the last ten years Ardfert has increased its score in the competition each year, primarily by helping to improve the tidiness and physical appearance of the village. However, of recent years the competition is requiring groups to become involved in bigger issues, specifically ‘Sustainable waste and resource management’ and ‘Wildlife, habitats and natural amenities’ These are areas that require particular expertise and motivation which, at present, the group feels it cannot supply. We also feel that these issues are more appropriate for local and national authorities to tackle. Although not entering the competition the group will continue to function as we have in past years and, hopefully, make a continuing contribution to the upkeep of the village. We would welcome anybody who would like to join the group and perhaps begin to address the new initiatives promoted by the competition, we could then consider re-entering in the future.
